Bentota Beach – a Pristine Beach in Southern Sri Lanka
The marvellous Bentota beach is among Sri Lanka’s most important beaches also due to its quiet location and width. The fine light sand runs flat into the sea. The whole beach is lined with palm trees and primeval forest. Being four kilometres long, it invites you to long walks. Water temperatures in the Indian Ocean are pleasant for bathing all year long. In summer the water level is higher and the beach accordingly narrower, however. The best bathing time falls between December and April.
You can choose yourself if you prefer jumping into the waves or swimming in safer places. The waves should not be underestimated along some stretches. They pile up and become stronger especially around sandbanks stretching farther out in the sea. There are enough places, however, where the sea is calmer and you can also splash about in it.
For those interested in water sports and leisure activities, there is much on offer. You can surf, sail, scuba-dive and snorkel. Yet, due to its size, the beach is never overcrowded, but half empty even in the high season. You can rent deckchairs.
The Bentota beach is a promontory between the Bentota River (Bentota-Ganga) and the sea. At its narrow end the river flows into the sea. There is a monastery with a temple complex there ,which is accessible through a small path. Not in bikini, however, but rather with knees and shoulders covered.
You will be driven from Villa Raphael to the Bentota Beach by car or trishaw. You can come back by trishaw on your own or be collected from any place.
